Pottermore and Fantastic Beasts 2 have announced an open casting call for five young roles, and the news offers us huge clues about where the sequel’s story is heading.
Fantastic Beasts 2 is looking for kids to play young versions of Newt, Leta Lestrange, Grindelwald, Dumbledore, and a new character named Sebastian. Newt, Leta, and Sebastian are to be between 13 and 16 years old, while Dumbledore and Grindelwald need to be between 16 and 18.
What’s this mean for the Fantastic Beasts sequel? For starters, it means something we’ve already suspected: We’ll be going back in time to see Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s early years.. like that time they got in that huge fight and accidentally killed Ariana Dumbledore.
The casting of young Newt and Leta likely means we’re going back to Hogwarts as well. Those ages (13 – 16) fit perfectly with the middle of their Hogwarts career. We’ll get to see what happened between Newt and Leta that caused the two to separate. Remember: We know Newt took the blame for an incident caused by Leta.
These flashback scenes will be huge treats for Harry Potter fans. Not only will we be going back to Hogwarts*, we’ll get to see the all-important relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and presumably that horrific night in Godric’s Hollow during which Albus lost his sister.
How could Ariana fit into the story? Many fans believe she was an Obscurus, and J.K. Rowling has hit ‘Like’ on several tweets with this theory. If she was an Obscurus, Newt could go to Dumbledore for help in figuring out what to do about Credence.
