Just days after Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon announced that the sibling-superheroes Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would be joining The Avengers sequel, director Bryan Singer has announced that Evan Peters will play the same character in his film X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Awkward. We reported last week that two of Joss Whedon’s favorite characters would be joining The Avengers sequel, but now it looks like Fox is throwing a curveball at Marvel, and X-Men director Bryan Singer has tweeted that Evan Peters will play the same character in his sequel.
Back in April, Joss Whedon said, “these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie.” Marvel president, Kevin Feige, went on to say that it may be difficult to use the characters, as they’re actually mutants, that were fathered by Magneto from X-Men. Of course, X-Men character rights are owned by Fox, but these apparently fell into a “grey area.”
Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.

Update: Bryan Singer has deleted his previous tweet seen above, which mentioned The Avengers, and replaced it with this:

Now that X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer has announced that the Quicksilver character will also have a role in his film, how will this effect the character’s overall story? We imagine with all the characters that are involved in Days of Future Past, Quicksilver will probably have a very small part – but does that change the fact that Singer announces the character is joining the film, less than a week after Joss Whedon announced he’d be in Avengers 2?
This certainly seems like an awkward position to be in, and now that Fox has used the character, does this change how Joss Whedon planned on using him in The Avengers 2? Could his story be impacted since he can no longer be a mutant that resembles the character that will be represented in X-Men: Days of Future Past? We’re unsure right now, but we’ll be interested to hear if Joss Whedon chimes in on the matter.
We could see a war of the directors brewing from this, which should be interesting nonetheless. We do know one thing, you don’t want to mess with Marvel right now, they just grabbed another billion at the box office from Iron Man 3.
Set for release July 18, 2014, X-Men: Days of Future Past also stars Ellen Page (Shadowcat), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), and Michael Fassbender (Magneto).
