Fox’s massive hit drama Empire (the one whose ratings grew with each episode in season 1) will become more of an “Empire” in its second season.

Update: During their Upfront presentation this afternoon, Fox announced that Chris Rock, Lenny Kravitz, and Alicia Keys have been booked for appearances in season 2.

The network announced Monday that Empire season 2 starring Terrence Howard will be 18 episodes in length, which is six episodes more than the show had in season 1.
With that good news comes a bit of bad news: Fox will be splitting Empire’s sophomore season into two halves. This means the show will run eight or nine episodes this fall, take a big break, then air the remaining episodes in the spring.
Fox also announced today that artist Ne-Yo will be joining Timbaland to write music for Empire season 2.
Empire is unquestionably Fox’s big hit right now, and the network is taking advantage of that fact. The series debuted its pilot to an audience of 9.9 million in January. The show grew week over week throughout the winter, with the season finale pulling a stunning 17.62 million viewers in March.
Fox made a slew of announcements today concerning their fall slate ahead of their presentation to advertisers, who they need to woo for the upcoming season. The biggest news was about their ageing singing competition series American Idol: The show will end after season 15 airs next year.
