An oldie but a goodie, this behind-the-scenes look at The Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood’s final day on the set of the trilogy was very emotional.
“I think probably for me the toughest [to say goodbye to] was Elijah,” explains trilogy director Peter Jackson. “Frodo is in some respects the heart and soul of this movie. It’s his journey, it’s his story. We start with Frodo and we finish with Frodo.”
Said Wood, “The last shot was a pick up from Bag End when Frodo is finishing up writing his story of what he’s experienced in Bilbo’s book. And essentially, the subject of the scene is that Frodo knows he’s going to leave and that he’s going to leave the book to Sam.”
“It was really quiet, it really quieted down” for those final few takes, added Dominic Monaghan (who played Merry).
We see that the cast and crew wanted to do more takes of the final scene because director Peter Jackson did not want filming to end.
Of course at the time, no one knew that Peter Jackson would go on to helm The Hobbit movie trilogy which includes a couple scenes with Elijah Wood as Frodo. We’re hoping that on the special features of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey DVD/Blu-ray we get to hear Jackson and Wood talk about what it was like to return to Middle Earth after saying farewell several years ago.
