Veteran actor Edward James Olmos has been cast in a recurring role in the second of half of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2.
For the time being, the details of Olmos’ role remain unsurprisingly vague. The actor has been cast as Robert Gonzales, a character whose appearance will reportedly have “massive repercussions” for our intrepid agents.
Executive Producer Jeph Loeb emphasizes that Gonzales will be a force to be reckoned with.
“Edward James Olmos brings an amazing gravitas to any role he inhabits, something we knew we needed for Robert Gonzales,” Loeb says. “When Olmos first appears on our series, everyone will have to take notice – including our favorite Agents.”
Olmos, who is 67, is perhaps known for his role as Captain William Adama on the rebooted Battlestar Galactica series. A veteran actor of the big and small screen, Olmos has received a Golden Globe award for his work on Miami Vice, and also earned an Academy Award nomination for Stand and Deliver.

For the time being, it’s hard to speculate on exactly what role Robert Gonzales will play in the second half of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2. But it’s worth noting that, having axed main antagonist Daniel Whitehall in the midseason finale, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may be in the market for a Big Bad.
Given Loeb’s description of Olmos’s formidable character, we suspect Gonzales might be just the man to fill that hole. If so, we have to wonder if Gonzales will have any ties to the mysterious Inhumans, who seem poised to make serious waves when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns in March.
Based on what we know of the Inhumans, a link between Gonzales and these enhanced humans may leave Director Coulson and company desperate for the relaxing days of dueling with season 1’s Clairvoyant. When powers are on the table, we suspect that all other bets are decidedly off.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will return on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
