Fox has confirmed with Hypable that Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien was “injured” on the Canadian set of the third film, The Death Cure.
The studio tells us: “Dylan O’Brien was injured [Thursday] while filming Maze Runner: The Death Cure in Vancouver, Canada. He was immediately transferred to a local hospital for observation and treatment. Production on the film will be shut down while he recovers. Our thoughts go out to Dylan for a full and speedy recovery.”
The news was originally reported by TMZ on Friday afternoon. According to their report, Dylan was “severely injured” and “suffered multiple broken bones” when he was run over by a car. Fox did not comment on the extent of Dylan’s injuries.
Update: Deadline reports Dylan “fell off the back of a set that was supposed to look like the back of a train and fractured either his cheekbone or orbital socket (still not clear on the details) when he fell on his face.” Meanwhile, EW spoke to Dylan’s agent who says “early reports indicate he will recover fully.”
The Death Cure is the third and final film in The Maze Runner series and is currently slated to hit theaters in February 2017. The movie is based on the book of the same name by James Dashner. Shooting began in Canada on March 14 under the direction of Wes Ball, who helmed the first two installments as well.
The actor plays Thomas, the lead character, in the trilogy.
Our thoughts are with Dylan, his friends and family, and the cast and crew as the actor recovers.
The last Maze Runner film was The Scorch Trials and opened in theaters last September (a still from the film is below). Dylan is also known for his role in MTV’s Teen Wolf, whose season finale aired on March 8.
At this time it’s too early to say what his injuries mean for the release of The Death Cure and future seasons of Teen Wolf.
