Lady Mary’s journey isn’t about to end for good. ITV announced Thursday that Downton Abbey has been renewed for a sixth series.
ITV is currently broadcasting Downton Abbey series 5 in the United Kingdom and, unsurprisingly, ratings have been strong. According to the network, an average of 10.4 million people have tuned in per episode. The series finale airs this Sunday, November 9 (but don’t forget the Christmas Special that airs on December 25).
“We have had an amazing reaction to the story lines, acting and production values of Downton Abbey this year and the whole team is thrilled to be moving ahead with a new season of the show,” said Downton Abbey producer Gareth Neame. “This will provide audiences with a fresh opportunity to see what will befall our much loved characters.”
ITV’s Director of Drama Commissioning, Steve November, said in a press release that he doesn’t know what’s ahead for series 6 of Downton Abbey, but he’s excited about it.
“It is fantastic that Downton continues to be such a phenomenon – still the most popular drama on ITV in its fifth series – and we are thrilled to have commissioned a sixth series. We don’t know yet what Julian has planned, but we are looking forward to working with him, the fantastic cast and Carnival again and have no doubt series six will be unmissable.”
If you’re an American who’s itching to watch Downton Abbey season 5, the wait is almost over! PBS Masterpiece will launch the fifth outing on Sunday, January 4, 2015.
Downton Abbey is one of a few English dramas that can manage to pull off a large number of series. Many British dramas – though successful – only last for a handful of years. The worldwide success of Downton Abbey has encouraged the show to continue pushing forward.
