Amazon has struck a deal with Downton Abbey whereby their Prime Instant Video service will be the only subscription site where you can stream the hit television show.
Downton Abbey season three will be available on Prime Instant Video beginning June 18. Seasons one should disappear from Netflix around that same time. Downton Abbey season four and beyond will also be exclusively on Amazon’s Netflix-competitor.
This is arguably one of Amazon’s best exclusivity grabs given the popularity of Downton Abbey over the past couple of years.
If Amazon Prime Instant Video isn’t for you, you’ll still be able to purchase digital versions through services like iTunes. You can also pick up physical copies. In fact, Downton Abbey series three was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States this past week.
Prime Instant Video is included with Amazon Prime, the $80/year service from Amazon which offers free 2-day shipping on all orders, unlimited streaming (their Netflix competitor), and lending of books.
We personally recommend Amazon Prime for multiple reasons:
1) It’s cheaper than Netflix when you compare the year costs ($95/year for Netflix, $80 for Amazon)
2) The Prime Instant Video selection is comparable to Netflix’s
3) Free 2-day shipping on all orders! Hello?
4) Free borrowing of select Kindle eBooks, including Harry Potter, for use on your tablet, computer, or phone.
Sad news for Netflix users.
