Following the official announcement that Donald Glover would portray Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo spinoff movie, the actor is speaking out about what the role means to him.
It’s been nearly a week since we first learned the Community actor would be taking on the coveted role of a young Lando for another Star Wars film.
Speaking with Ellen DeGeneres on her show, Glover tells the audience why he’s excited for the role and the sage piece of advice his mother gave him:
“You’re in Star Wars!” Ellen tells Glover. “It’s really crazy. I don’t know. I’m very, like, honored. It’s a very big deal,” he says, probably overwhelmed by the very idea of being in a Star Wars film, let alone getting to play a character made famous by Billy Dee Williams.
This is especially true when you consider Glover has been a fan of the franchise and the character since he was a kid. “That was the first toy I had,” he says, speaking of a Lando action figure.
So, how did Glover’s parents react when they found out the big news? Well, his father was pretty happy for him, but his mother immediately had something else to say: “Don’t mess it up!”
Ellen is quick to assuage his fears, though, saying that Billy Dee’s portrayal is completely different from what Glover will bring to the table.
And, indeed, this is good advice for fans who might be hesitant to see someone else take on the role — just remember that this is a character in a different part of his life, and whatever Glover chooses to do with the role, it’s coming from a place of respect and admiration.
If you’re looking to see what else Glover has been up to lately, look no further than Spider-Man: Homecoming and his new television show Atlanta, which premiered on FX.
