Most Doctor Who fans have always felt like the TARDIS was in fact another character. Jenna-Louise Coleman now reveals that the TARDIS wasn’t exactly keen on Clara at first.
The Doctor has always talked to the TARDIS as if it were a living thing. On a certain level, it is alive, with its telepathic field and operational quirks.
In the Neil Gaiman episode, The Doctor’s Wife, we see the TARDIS come to life in the body of Idris and interact with the Doctor in human form. Their relationship is interesting, awkward, and incredibly flirty. We learn that, in fact, the TARDIS is a she, and that she chose the Doctor more than he chose her.
There are essentially two quotes from that episode that define their relationship. The first is, “Borrowing implies the eventual intention to return the thing that was taken. What makes you think I would ever give you back?” The second is a response to the Doctor complaining that the TARDIS has a habit of ending up not where he thought he was taking it. Idris responds that the misdirection has always been intentional stating, “I always took you where you needed to go.”
In the reboot era, the only companion to fully interact with the TARDIS was Rose Tyler, who looked into the heart of the TARDIS. She temporarily gained enormous power, and almost died because of it. Others have helped to pilot the TARDIS, but that’s as far as any direct interaction has gone.
In a new interview in TV Guide, Jenna-Lousie Coleman reveals that Clara and the TARDIS interact, and the TARDIS sounds a bit like a jealous girlfriend.
Actually I don’t think we’ve talked about this in interviews before. It’s something that’s running through the series. Instead of it being like, “Does so-and-so like Clara?” The TARDIS and Clara have a bit of a face-off. So, the Doctor is obviously bringing back somebody new. I think we’ve done a whole additional content scene of me talking to the TARDIS, and the TARDIS is making fun of Clara. They kind of have an argument. They’ve got a relationship individual to the Doctor where they have a dialogue.
