The latest in a long line of Doctor Who rumours suggests that Amy and Rory’s final encounter with the Weeping Angels could see them coming up against a new breed of the creature. This post contains spoilers.
According to the Daily Star, the Statue of Liberty is revealed as a Weeping Angel while The Doctor, The Ponds and River Song are in New York. The tabloid seemingly has no evidence (or even their usual “sources,” so trust this if you dare), but states that the “305ft-tall statue in New York harbour turns out to be the biggest one [Weeping Angel] of them all.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time the idea of Lady Liberty secretly being a Weeping Angels has been thrown about. Ever since fans heard the words “Doctor Who,” “Weeping Angels,” “New York,” and “epic” in the same sentence, the theories have been flying around internet forums and even in our own comment threads. And while this rumour hardly adds any credibility to the theory, it’s an interesting thought. However, it does present a tricky problem for writer Steven Moffat. The fact that there is always SOMEONE looking at the Statue of Liberty would render it completely still (as a statue is). While this is a helpful way of explaining the lack of suspicious activity in the past, it also presents a new dilemma – how could there possibly be an occasion where no one is looking at the statue (thus enabling it to reveal itself as an Angel)? Should the rumour prove to be true, it will certainly be fascinating to see how The Moff handles this tricky problem.
