Doctor Who season 9 comes to a close tonight, and it will likely be a showdown.
Doctor Who has already had a fantastic season. Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman both made the season one of the very best in terms of performance. To be fair, the writing this season was more consistent than it has been in ages. We had characters we cared about, villains who were intriguing, and stakes that were high. We also had a phenomenal level of performances turned in by guest stars such as Ingrid Oliver, Maisie Williams, and Michelle Gomez.
Granted, the Doctor Who Christmas Special is coming up in a few weeks, but this season leaves us yearning for more in ways that it hasn’t in recent seasons. No matter what happens tonight, there are going to be a multitude of unanswered questions.
One of the things fans are going to be intrigued by in the off-season is the companion replacement that will no doubt be coming up. The Doctor might travel alone for awhile, but it won’t be for long. Fans are going to be eager to know who then newbie is. It builds a level of excitement as season 10 will likely start filming in late winter or early spring. Everyone is going to want a glimpse of the newbie.
This season has been the season where Peter Capaldi found his rhythm. There’s just the right balance of irascibility mixed with empathy and a dash of quirkiness thrown in. The Doctor has new trademark items that really work for Capaldi. For starters there are the blackboard and books that give the Doctor a bit of an intellectual feel. At the same time those items are juxtaposed with the electric guitar-playing Doctor. Make no mistake, it’s actually Capaldi playing, as he used to be in a punk rock band with Craig Ferguson. There are also the sonic sunglasses that are actually growing on us.
Tonight is possibly the biggest test of all things Doctor Who. The Doctor is going back to Gallifrey for the first time in the reboot era, and he is going alone. Who has called him, what are their motives, and what will be the outcome of the hybrid mystery remain to be seen.
Doctor Who airs tonight on BBC America at 9:00 p.m.
