In the lead-up to “Asylum of the Daleks” hitting screens worldwide next Saturday, all eyes are on the upcoming series 7 of Doctor Who. But lest we forget, next year brings the 50th anniversary of the show, and if the words of star Matt Smith and showrunner Steven Moffat are anything to go by, it will eclipse everything the show has done before!
Speaking to Digital Spy at last week’s BFI preview screening, the cast and crew of the show were out in full force to talk, tease, and (in the case of Steven Moffat) troll. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill both revealed they are really looking forward to “The Power of Three,” as it gives the audience our biggest glimpse at “life for the companions between time travel” with the focus firmly on the Ponds at home. Meanwhile, producers Caroline Skinner and Steven Moffat described the girl who waited and the last centurion’s final adventure as a “dark atmospheric genre piece,” laced with many elements of a noir movie.
Perhaps the most interesting quote of all came from Matt Smith, who answered a question about next year’s big 50th anniversary celebrations by reiterating he would be involved, but was yet to find out “in what capacity.” Check out the full four-minute video below, which also sees the cast members discuss filming in New York, writer Chris Chibnall and more.
As always with Doctor Who, the exact plans for next year are kept under tight wraps (even from the star himself, apparently). But what we do know is that Doctor Who writer and regular guest star – in a variety of roles – will be penning a biopic “docu-drama” which will detail the show’s origins in 1963.
Doctor Who returns in Britian, America, and Canada on Sept 1. Catch the newly released trailer for the series here.
