Actress Tilda Swinton is in talks to join actor Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s film adaptation of Doctor Strange as a very mysterious character.
THR reports that Tilda Swinton is in talks to join Doctor Strange as the Ancient One, who is a Tibetan mystic that mentors Doctor Strange. She trains people to be the next “sorcerer supreme.” While the character is male in the comics, Marvel is looking to add some female characters to the film.
Adding Swinton to the cast would be very smart, as this could be seen as one of the more serious superhero films from the studio, with Cumberbatch in the lead, and we would love to see her alongside the beloved actor.
Back in December Marvel President Kevin Feige commented on Cumberbatch’s casting, saying, “Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
Marvel have always seemed excited about Doctor Strange as a film, and having an actor of Tilda Swinton’s calibre join the film alongside Benedict is very exciting. It’s especially interesting considering there was also talk that Chiwetel Ejiofor may also be in the film.
This could end up being a very star-studded movie, with some insanely talented actors, but we imagine Doctor Strange will continue in Marvel’s vein of excellent superhero films.
Scott Derrickson will be directing Doctor Strange, with Jon Spaihts penning the script. The film’s release date has been set for November 4, 2016.
