The chances of NBC’s Smash being renewed for a third season were nearly annihilated after today’s announcement that star Debra Messing will be the lead in a new CBS comedy this fall.
The news of Messing’s new casting comes from TVGuide.com, who report that the new comedy Messing will lead in is written by former Sex and the City writers. The comedy is currently untitled, and is based off of an Israeli series.
Messing will play a mom named Shira, who, you guessed it, struggles with the balances of home, work, and children.
Although NBC hasn’t confirmed Smash‘s cancellation, fans are convinced that the show won’t live to see a third season after its recent banishment to Saturday nights. Thankfully, showrunner Josh Safran has gone on the record to state that “fans won’t be left hanging” at the end of season 2.
If Messing moving on to another show for next season didn’t add more fuel to the Smash cancellation fire, she will also be joined by Smash executive producers/writers Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky. Furthermore, Messing will act as an executive producer for the unnamed CBS comedy pilot.
We’re very upset to hear all of the foreboding news for Smash, but we’re glad that Messing is continuing on with large moves in her career. She’s known for her time as Grace on Will and Grace, and, in our opinion, deserves to find another “smash” of a show to be on.
What do you think of this latest Smash cancellation speculation news? Are you convinced that Smash won’t continue on for a third season, and will you follow Messing over to CBS if season 2 is its end?
