With Ryan Reynolds returning as Deadpool in the X-Men spinoff movie, who will be his leading lady?
In December 2014, we brought you the news that Ryan Reynolds (38) would be reprising his role as Deadpool in the 2016 movie of the same name. Reynolds last donned the suit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), and went on to play another superhero, the Green Lantern, in 2011.
While nothing is certain yet, Deadline has reported that Deadpool is now close to finding its female lead. It’s down to six actresses, all of whom you’ll probably recognize from iconic TV series…
Morena Baccarin
Perhaps the biggest genre name on the list, Morena Baccarin (35) is probably still most recognizable as Inara in Firefly, although her body of work since the early 2000s has been extensive. With notable roles in Stargate SG-1, Heartland, V, Homeland and most recently Gotham and The Flash, it makes sense that Barracin would be considering a move to the big screen.
Jessica De Gouw
Jessica De Gouw (26) first popped up on our radar in 2012, when she joined Arrow as The Huntress (Helena). She also starred in the short-lived Dracula as Mina Murray, Dracula’s primary love interest.
Sarah Greene
Irish actress Sarah Greene is probably the least-known actress on the list, her most notable role being a three-episode stint as Judith in Vikings. She’s got a background in theater, and was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in The Cripple of Inishmaan.
Rebecca Rittenhouse
We were surprised (but pleased) to see Rebecca Rittenhouse’s name on this list: Rittenhouse landed her first big role last year as Nurse Dobler in Red Band Society, and while the show had its ups and downs, Rittenhouse was definitely one of the ups. We could totally see her making the movie to the big screen — plus, does anyone else have a feeling that she’d look really good with Ryan Reynolds?
Crystal Reed
Another genre favorite, Crystal Reed (30) is an alum of MTV’s Teen Wolf. Her character Allison was not only the main character’s love interest, but a badass archer taking down the bad guys. Reed only has one post-Teen Wolf project lined up, playing the lead role in a drama titled Too Late.
Taylor Schilling
Orange is the New Black star Taylor Schilling (30) probably has fairly good odds of landing the part, not only because she is a spectacular actress, but because of her pedigree as the star of a highly successful, edgy drama. Previous movie roles include Christine in Argo, Beth in The Lucky One, and Emily in this year’s The Overnight.
Now, not only do we not know which actress will get the part, but we don’t even know what the part is.
According to Den of Geek, Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) has had no less than 11 romantic interests in the comics, before marrying Shiklah (a former bride of Dracula) earlier this year.
The Mystique-type character Copycat, good girl Siryn, Death (who is female, in case you were wondering), and the badass Anastasia are just a few possible characters that screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick might have chosen to pair Reynolds’ Deadpool up with in the script.
Deadpool is directed by Tim Miller, and filming starts later this month. The movie is scheduled for release in February 2016.
