Doctor Who and Broadchurch star David Tennant was honored at last night’s National Television Awards in Britain with a Special Recognition Award.
Whereas actors usually know when they’re about to be honored with a special award, it seemed like David Tennant genuinely didn’t see this coming.
Last night the 2015 National Television Awards took place in London, and one of the biggest awards went to Tennant for his brilliant work on stage and screen. As the actor’s name was called and the tribute video began, Tennant looked shocked and moved. Take a look:
The tribute video included praise from Billie Piper, Richard Wilson, Stephen Fry, Olivia Colman, Catherine Tate, Russell T. Davies, and his father.
Piper, who co-starred with Tennant on Doctor Who, called Tennant a “special actor, and a decent human being.” Wilson praised his “metamorphic ability to play a very wide range of parts.”
Fry said of Tennant that, “I think of David you always want to know more. You kind of look and you just want to look further.” Colman (Tennant’s co-star on Broadchurch) said he is “always a joy – I haven’t seen him yet be grumpy,” adding that he has a complete lack of an ego.
“He’s a very gifted person, but he is able to be a human within that,” Piper said, with Colman calling him an “utterly, utterly good human being.”
In his acceptance speech, Tennant struggled to find the words to express his gratitude. “I am so glad I didn’t get stuck in traffic! This is a very out-of-body experience,” he admitted. “So much of tonight now makes sense! All those people lying to me.”
It’s clear that Tennant had no idea that this was coming, and it only makes the tribute so much sweeter.
After the ceremony, Radio Times caught up with the actor, and he called the entire experience “sensory overload”:
Congratulations to David Tennant for this very deserved award!
