Marvel and Netflix have announced that Doctor Who actor David Tennant has officially joined their Netflix series A.K.A Jessica Jones as the show’s villain.
After Marvel’s Daredevil show premieres on Netflix, A.K.A Jessica Jones will be the next Marvel property to be given the Netflix treatment. Marvel has already cast Krysten Ritter in the starring role of Jessica Jones, and now she’ll be starring opposite Doctor Who actor David Tennant.
Tennant will be playing Zebediah Killgrave (aka The Purple Man), who is an enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past. His reappearance will reportedly “send shockwaves through Jessica Jones’ world.”
The series is being developed by executive Producer and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, who says, “I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character. He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”
Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s head of television says, “Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave. While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.”
David Tennant became an international superstar as the 10th Doctor in BBC’s massively popular Doctor Who series, and can be seen more recently in the American adaptation of Broadchurch, which is titled, Gracepoint.
The show’s villain, Kilgrave, can reportedly produce pheromones which give him the power to control other people’s minds when he’s near them, which should fit right in for Tennant, who already has that effect on his fans.
A.K.A. Jessica Jones has a 13-episode series which will premiere on Netflix later in 2015.
