The nominations for the 19th annual Critics Choice Movie Awards have been revealed, with 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle leading the pack.
Joining 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle, who each received 13 nominations, for Best Picture were Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, Saving Mr. Banks, and Wolf of Wall Street. In short, the usual suspects so far from the Oscar campaign.
There were, however a few surprise nominations farther down the list. Brie Larson received a Best Actress nomination from the Broadcast Film Critics Association for her tremendous work in Short Term 12, as this, coupled with her win at the Gotham Awards earlier this month, adds intrigue to an otherwise stale Best Actress category. The film, along with distributor Cinedigm, is likely too small to mount much of an Oscar campaign, but it will be something to keep track of nevertheless.
Farther down the categories, such crowd-pleasers as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Conjuring, The Heat and World War Z picked up nominations as Best Action Film, Best Comedy and Best Horror/Sci-Fi were honored.
The 19th annual Critics Choice Movie Awards will take place January 16, 2014.
