NBC have made a decision to complete production of the freshman season of Constantine after the initial 13 episode order.
The Hellblazer adaption won’t be following in the footsteps of its distant DC cousins over on Fox and the CW, as both Gotham and The Flash received full-season orders.
According to Deadline the decision was made based on the first four episodes, as NBC began airing Constantine late into the Fall schedule, opting to pair it up with supernatural drama Grimm.
Though Constantine hasn’t been performing as well in the ratings as expected, the show has seen a marked improvement in DVR lifts, and this past week enjoyed its highest ratings since the premiere episode. “Danse Vaudou,” which saw the introduction of Detective Jim Corrigan (Emmett Scanlan), has been hailed by fans as a turning point for the show — and the ending in particular promised some very great things to come for the remainder of the season.
But what does this mean for the future of Constantine? The show has not been cancelled by NBC, and the network is continuing to be supportive of its first foray into the comic book adaption — the cast will be featured during the network’s broadcast of Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, and a marathon of the first four episodes recently ran on SyFy. Should the ratings continue to trend upwards, a second season should still be on the cards.
13 episode seasons aren’t unheard of for NBC either. Hannibal, which also airs in the 10 p.m. time slot, enjoyed a 13 episode run for its first and second seasons — and will be returning at some point in 2015 for a third season. A shorter season could also work in Constantine’s favour, leading to a sharper and more concise story.
