Disney announced on Thursday that they will be releasing a collected box set of Hayao Miyazaki’s work on Blu-ray, shipping exclusively from Amazon.
When you think of animated film, Hayao Miyazaki’s is one of the first names that comes to mind. His poignant films are much beloved, and now, thanks to Disney, you’ll be able to own one of the most complete collections of his work. We’re staring longingly at our bank accounts, and wondering how much of a dent this will put in it.
Nerdist revealed that the box set will be released on November 17 and will feature all 11 of Miyazaki’s feature films — Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises.
As if that wasn’t enough, the box set will also include the five-minute pilot for Yuki no Taiyō, his trial-run in anticipation of a series adaption of Tetsuya Chiba’s manga of the same name. Also included on this bonus disc are Akado Suzunosuke episodes 26, 27, and 41, which Miyazaki storyboarded, and the uncut version of Miyazaki’s Retirement Press Conference, though news of his retirement was greatly exaggerated, as Miyazaki is currently working on a Samurai manga for Model Graphix, and some animated shorts for the Ghibli Museum in Japan.
Fans of Miyazaki who pick up the box set will also be treated to a book by Tomohiro Machiyama called The Great Dichotomy: Looking at the Works of Hayao Miyazaki. It is described as exploring “the themes and techniques of this revered Japanese filmmaker, and selected text from Hayao Miyazaki’s initial notes and creative proposals for the production of each film.”
Can’t wait that long for your Miyazaki fix? You can currently catch the Ghibli documentary, The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, on Netflix as filmmaker Mami Sunada follows Miyazaki and other Ghibli executives over the course of a year. Definitely worth the watch for any Studio Ghibli fan.
