For all you Oscar nominees who are most definitely trawling through Hypable looking for news right now, don’t be afraid: according to Colin Firth, you’re better off losing.
Being nominated for an Oscar is, we can only imagine, a big honor. But the joy is short-lived, because soon you realise that you’re not only a potential winner – you’re a potential loser.
And unless your name is Meryl Streep, there’s a fairly big chance that you will lose. Suddenly, that joy at being nominated is tarnished, and you’ll feel much like us mere mortals who have experienced coming in second or third in a sack race or a pub quiz.

But never fear, for Mr. Darcy is here: when appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show to promote his newest film Kingsman: The Secret Service, Colin Firth opened up about his experiences losing – and winning – at the Oscars, and revealed that the coveted golden statuette isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Firth, who won an Oscar in 2011 for his role in The King’s Speech, explains that for losers, “there’s a much bigger party.” Probably both figuratively and literally.
As a nominee who didn’t pick up the grand prize, “you’re among the 80%, not the 20%,” and there’s a real solidarity among people who are commiserating with each other,” Firth explained. “There’s a little bit less hatred when you’re one of the people that didn’t pick something up.”
We’re sorry to hear that there’s hatred at all for the 54-year-old British actor. But you know what, who needs friends when you have an Oscar? You can probably just find new people to hang out with.
