At SDCC, Christopher Larkin looked ahead to The 100 season 4, previewing Monty’s struggles and sharing his hopes for Monty/Harper.
In The 100 season 3, Monty (Christopher Larkin) and Harper (Chelsey Reist) finally acted on the feelings that seemed to have been brewing between them for a while.
Monty also found himself working with Raven (Lindsey Morgan) to stop ALIE, all the while battling the inner turmoil that understandably came with having to kill his mother twice.
We caught up with Larkin at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 to get some clarification on Monty’s feelings for Harper, where he hopes the relationship will go, and what group of survivors Monty might choose to align himself with.
Hypable: What do you hope to see for Monty in season 4?
Larkin: I think romance is a big part of it. I think this is sort of just his first foray into the romantic realm at all, and I don’t think he’s a one-night-stand kind of guy. I think Monty… when he chooses his people he commits fully, and I think he’s gonna want to develop that relationship as much as possible. You know, he’s never sacrificed for a romantic interest before, so I’m interested to see where that would go, how that would play out.
Yeah, cause in season 3 it wasn’t totally clear how deep his feelings were.
Larkin: I know, we had to go straight back into it. I mean he kills his mother, for a second time, so I don’t think… Yeah, he had to put Harper on the side for a second.
Are we gonna see that relationship develop in season 4?
Larkin: I don’t know yet. I hope so. I hope Harper doesn’t bite the dust by episode 2, I hope that there’s time to really stretch it out. It’s a big part of growing up, developing as a human being, so we’ll see.
In the same interview, Larkin was also asked what Monty’s priorities will be, when he finds out that the world is ending in 6 months.
“Clearly he’s made his choice,” says Larkin, “if he was gonna become despondent and just give up — after killing your mother twice — I think he would have shut down a long time ago. He’s in for the fight.”
Larkin does wonder (like we’re all wondering) how they might go about trying to save everyone, considering they’re facing a radioactive apocalypse. “I think the one consolation is that the Mountain Men did it, the Grounders did it, so it’s possible [to survive],” Larkin says. “But I think we need to start working together. Enough of this rift, we need to start uniting in some way.”
Speaking about people working together: One of the best, most unexpected season 3 team-ups was Monty and Raven. On their newfound friendship, Larkin says, “I think it’s about time that you put the two best minds together and do some damage! I was saying [to Lindsey Morgan] that it’s incredible to finally work with her, it’s the first time we’ve ever had any scenes together. With Monty’s mom’s death too, it was so challenging, but having Lindsey by my side made it a million times easier. So, happy to have her.”
Finally, we told him that the characters are going to split up into new factions in season 4 (which apparently he didn’t know yet), and asked which people Monty might choose to align himself with.
“I don’t know which the factions are,” Larkin admits, “but I would assume that no matter what the factions are, it would include Jasper. And, I mean, the original Scooby Gang. I mean it would have to be the people he’s been with since the beginning, he has the most history and love for these people. Easy choice — unless Harper goes off with some Grounder clan. Then he’s torn.”
