Will Avett Walker be able to turn a life of mistakes and misfortunes around? Not without the help of a very attractive legal eagle in Charged by Jay Crownover.
Since we saw a glimpse of them together in Built, we knew that Avett and Quaid’s story was going to be one for the record books. They did not disappoint. The Saints of Denver series is shaping up to be one hell of a collection of characters and we are more excited than ever to see what the inimitable Jay Crownover has up her sleeve next for this fun and familiar world.
About ‘Charged’
Avett Walker and Quaid Jackson’s worlds have no reason to collide. Ever. Quaid is a high powered criminal attorney as slick as he is handsome. Avett is a pink-haired troublemaker with a bad attitude and a history of picking the wrong men.
When Avett lands in a sea of hot water because of one terrible mistake, the only person who can get her out of it is the insanely sexy lawyer. The last thing on earth she wants to do is rely on the no-nonsense attorney who thinks of her as nothing more than a nuisance. He literally has her fate in his hands. Yet there is something about him that makes her want to convince him to loosen his tie and have a little fun… with her.
Quaid never takes on clients like the impulsive young woman with a Technicolor dye job. She could stand to learn a hard lesson or two, but something about her guileless hazel eyes intrigues him. Still, he’s determined to keep their relationship strictly business. But doing so is becoming more impossible with each day he spends with her.
As they work side-by-side, they’ll have to figure out a way to get along and keep their hands off each other—because the chemistry between them is beyond charged.
‘Charged’ book review
When I first met Avett Walker in the Marked Men series, I can’t say I thought much about her. She was a troublemaker, but as Brite Walker’s daughter, I always assumed that there had to be good in her too. Little did I know that a short year or two after my introduction to this lovely inked-up corner of the romance world, I would be falling in love with a pair of characters who embody the idea of ‘opposites attract’ in so many ways, while being alike in all the ways that count.
As far as heroes go, Quaid Jackson is remarkably different than many of Jay Crownover’s tatted up bad boys. He’s as close to the ‘bad boy in disguise’ as I can imagine possible. He grew up the black sheep of his family, never fitting in with their style of living, and rebelling against it by joining the army and running off to serve and protect. His bad boy side is private, his rebellions all his own. The world wouldn’t necessarily see his actions as rebellious, but his family definitely did.
He may not sport full sleeves of ink for the world to see on a daily basis or rock a dragon tat that envelopes his entire body, but Quaid Jackson is no stranger to ink. He wears his eagle tat across his chest as a badge of honor, a private declaration that he doesn’t fit into any box. He is one of the most unique and layered characters I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. He may seem to be obsessed with the material things, but for a boy that grew up with very little in the way of possessions, it’s only natural to overcompensate a little.
Avett’s story is one that I’ve definitely been anticipating since her story wove its way into Asa. I may not have ever been the wild child that Avett Walker turned into, but I felt like her spirit is one that we can all relate to in one way or another. Like Quaid, she also wears a badge of honor, hers just isn’t ink under her skin. Her badge of honor is in not letting her mistakes turn her into a woman her father and mother cannot recognize. She could have easily given in to the self-destructive urges she has always managed to stay on the right side of. She could have surrendered to them and stopped fighting to make Brite and her mother proud. Instead, she owned up to her mistakes and took her punishments on the chin.
Quad and Avett’s whirlwind romance is exactly the type of story you hope to find. They are both so caught up in the connection they’ve forged that they can’t see which end is up. Their romance is the kind we’ve spent time daydreaming about as we stare out the car window on long trips. We all hope that someday, someone will come into our lives that understands us half as well as Quaid understands Avett. Her pink hair is just as much a part of her as her good heart, it just took the right man to realize that the wild child didn’t need to be tamed, just understood.
