Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is teaming up with Dan Aykroyd to form Ghost Corps, a new production company that will work with Channing Tatum and the Russo brothers, who plan to further develop the Ghostbusters franchise.
Update: Chris Pratt is now rumored to co-star with Channing Tatum in the all-male Ghostbusters movie that Sony is putting together to go along with their all-female film.
While we know the female Ghostbusters will be starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, the new male Ghostbusters spinoff sounds interesting as well. Having Dan Aykroyd involved is also exciting, and having Marvel’s Russo brothers come in as writers/directors couldn’t be a better move for the studio.
Sony has also hired Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce to pen the script for the male Ghostbusters, which will be a comedy similar to the original films, but will most likely be attached in some way to the highly anticipated female version, which is being released first.
Ivan Reitman told Deadline, “We want to expand the ‘Ghostbusters’ universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July, 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come.”
He followed up, having said, “The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies… My primary focus will be to build the ‘Ghostbusters’ into the universe it always promised it might become… we finally got together and found a way.”
While the Russo brothers aren’t officially attached yet, due to their many responsibilities with Marvel, which includes Captain America: Civil War, and the rumored Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 & 2, who knows if they’ll be able to take on this project as well.
Channing Tatum is an exciting name to land on the list though, as his production company will have a part in the male led film, but we imagine he may be a cast member as well. We’d welcome the lead actor, who has proven he has the comedic acting chops to star in a Ghostbusters spinoff.
Apparently there’s also talk of a Ghostbusters TV series, so it seems there’s a lot going on behind-the-scenes, and we imagine we’ll start finding out more as the female-led Ghostbusters movie starts production.
