Tonight is the first episode back on Castle following Rick’s banishment from the precinct. How will it go? Let’s find out!
It seems Castle was not handling his exile very well, both Kate and Martha comment on him being dressed for the day. He promises a surprise for Kate as she gets called away to the crime scene. At said crime scene, everyone is reacting a bit differently to the lack of Castle’s presence. Kate is sad, Espo is resigned, Perlmutter (the male ME who clearly needs a first name because that last name is a mouthful) is on cloud nine, and Ryan is doing his best Castle impression. It’s awesome BTW.
Fear not, because Castle’s surprise is that he got his private investigator license. The whole scene with him flashing his paper is hilarious. Castle beats Kate and Espo to the victim’s work. His investigator voice is also hilarious. Our victim was in charge of admissions at a very elite private school and Castle gets left behind as Kate and Espo continue the police investigation.
After getting pepper sprayed by the victim’s friend, Castle learns that she was planning an out of town trip. He heads down to the morgue and aggravates Perlmutter even more in a hilarious bit but also proves to Beckett that he is better than she gave him credit for. Kate tracks down a lead to…
Castle’s PI office! He is talking to Nicole Morris, an attorney who met with the victim days before her murder. She got uncomfortable when the victim asked questions about murder and the statutes concerning it in Massachusetts. Kate and Rick start to theorize and he tries to seduce her but she gets interrupted by a call from Espo. She leaves him to go question a witness.
Turns out the victim’s old boyfriend was killed 15 years ago and she was convinced it was foul play. How do they get to that conclusion? They both try to trick the other into giving up what the other knows and they end up saying it at the same time and theorizing. This leads to some bow chicka wow wow. However, Kate told Ryan what they figured out and gets ahead of Castle in the investigation, tainting their night.
Castle proves yet again that he is really an asset to the team when he gets to the next lead before Kate and the boys. The guy tells them that the death of the boyfriend wasn’t an accident but he was forced to cover it up. This leads them to Spaulding Elliot, a guy on the fast track for big things in the political world. He insists he is being set up and Castle is the one to prove he is being framed.
Kate gives Castle a win, kinda, by letting him be the one to tell Nicole Morris how they figured out she killed the victim. She was paid by some unknown entity and Kate arrests her. That night Kate gives Castle the cutest gift, a Sherlockian hat and magnifying glass.
This development seems to have given the cast a bit of a jolt of energy so I’ll enjoy the ride while it lasts!
Side Notes and Quotes:
– This has been bugging me lately, but people in TV/movies come in to their homes and don’t turn on the lights but pour themselves a drink. Then they die. I always turn on the lights before I do anything when I come home.
– Castle casually mentioning that Kate will go crazy when it’s her kid is heartening no?!
– Fillion again proves he’s the master of comedy with his facial expressions all throughout the episode.
– “Sorry Sherlock, not this time.”
– “You played the C-card.” Castle to Ryan when he finds out Ryan said that it was a conspiracy.
– Baby Castle
