Joe and Anthony Russo have let slip that Captain Marvel, the MCU’s first female superhero with her own solo movie, will appear in the two-part Avengers finale.
With Captain America: Civil War now in theaters — and everyone seemingly pretending that it’s really an Avengers movie — it’s time to look ahead to the two-part Avengers finale formerly known as Infinity War, Parts 1 and 2.
While at a screening at the Smithsonian Institute in D.C., the Russo brothers looked ahead to their Avengers adventure, and name-dropped Captain Marvel in the process.
When a fan asked, “did you just confirm Captain Marvel?” they responded, “um, Captain Barvel.”
So unless Captain Marvel has a male twin brother, let’s consider this one in the bag. Considering the Russos have previously estimated a total of 67 characters in the Infinity Wars, it’s hardly surprising — but reassuring nonetheless.

Captain Marvel is the MCU’s first, and so far only, female character who’s set to have her own solo movie. Captain Marvel is not set for release until 2019, however, and fans are still clamoring for that elusive Black Widow movie.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a couple of badass ladies, only a few of them are ‘superheroes’ in the traditional sense: We’ve got Black Widow, Scarlet Vision and Lady Sif, any of whom could presumably lead a standalone movie. Sharon Carter and Maria Hill, while not Avengers, also deserve stories centered on their characters. (And there’s always Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Daisy Johnson, of course, whose jump to the big screen would be amazing.)
But for now, Captain Marvel is the MCU’s only leading lady, and with Infinity War, Part 1 set for release in May 2018, it would be the perfect opportunity to establish her character ahead of her own film — similarly to what Civil War did for Spider-Man, and what Batman v Superman did for Wonder Woman.
Marvel has to hurry up and cast her though — last we heard, Rebecca Ferguson was up for the role.
