Broadchurch starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, one of the best new dramas in recent years, returns for a second series on January 5.
To celebrate the release date announcement, ITV debuted the first proper Broadchurch series 2 trailer on Thursday:
While the new Broadchurch trailer doesn’t offer much insight into what detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller will be dealing with this season, we do see Colman’s character ask someone where they were when two girls went missing. Perhaps this is what the series will focus on? The trailer also has lots of emotional moments (thanks in part to the song they chose) and appears to introduce several new characters.
What do you think of the ‘Broadchurch’ season 2 trailer?
We were surprised by the amount of emotion one trailer could bring across (again, the song was very helpful in packing an emotional punch). There’s also the fact that these characters went through a lot of heartbreak during series 1, so we’re still feeling for them over a year later.
No one was sure if Broadchurch was going to return for season 2 when the first series aired last year, because the whodunit drama ended on a very conclusive note. Luckily, the final episode concluded with a message that confirmed the show would be coming back for a second run.
The trailer comes on the same day that Fox’s adaptation of Broadchurch titled Gracepoint – also starring David Tennant – reveals their killer during the season finale. The ratings for the United States installment have been poor despite following a very similar plot line, so we don’t expect Gracepoint to return for a second season.
