Who exactly put together Brandon James’ lair from this week’s Scream together, and what can we expect next?
Before we get into our analysis, it’s important to note that there is a GIANT body horror/medical/gore/general grossness warning for this article.
We have a bunch of up close screen captures from this week’s episode of Scream. If any of the above disturb you, now might be a good time to exit.
The X-Rays
Apart from making the Brandon James lair look extremely cool, we’re not quite sure the x-rays serve much purpose to the overall story. They certainly paint a picture and create a dramatic effect though, pointing directly to James and letting the kids know the theme of the space. Maybe this means the killer likes to put on a show. Noah did warn that the entire lair looked like a staged masterpiece, so whoever set up this whole thing certainly has a flair for the dramatic.
Tyler’s Head
Again, we warned you this article wasn’t for the faint of heart, because this one is visceral. But here’s what stood out to us in this moment. It looks like Tyler’s eyes have gone missing. Maybe eyeballs decompose at a faster rate than other areas of the face? (sorry, sorry, sorry) Or do we think that the killer specifically gouged them out? Kind of like James did to Bret back in 1994…
The Post-OP Masks
Here’s the cool thing about the post-op recovery masks – they’re real. These are actual tools that doctors use to protect the faces of their patients after certain kinds of facial reconstruction or plastic surgery. But here’s the small rub: If a custom mask was made after each surgery, what does the killer plan to do with them? It’s not like they can wear them, because they’re custom. Do they plan to just keep dropping them like creepy little breadcrumbs? What’s the long game here?
Dead Pig
Like Emma said, we can be pretty certain that the heart her mother received in the mail was from this poor creature’s massacred body. But here’s the curious thing: Where has its head gone, and do we think it’ll pop up somewhere in the future?
Graffiti Face
Okay, killer, we know Ghostface is a pretty great alias name. But trust us, you are not the next Banksy. So stick to what you know best and keep the tagging as a hobby for weekends. No, but seriously, what’s the significance of this symbol? If the killer is already using mask pieces as a clue, they need something else to point people in the right direction? Or maybe the Scream writers thought it would just fit into the overall MTV vibe. Just looking cool on TV could be a thing as well.
The Tokens
This one is basically from the “Creepy Psycho Killer – 101” textbook. It’s almost so cliche it doesn’t even feel real. Whoever is doing this wants to check every box they possibly can just to create the whole serial killer effect.
Missing Yearbook Photos
The final element from the room consists of the missing photos that had been cut out of the old yearbook mailed to Emma. Clearly she’s the intended observer. Whoever is doing all of this, setting up the room and sending out dead pig hearts, is definitely trying to get her attention. So who wants to be on Emma’s radar so badly? Or why are they so intent on threatening HER specifically? Before we can speculate much further, we need these key details to move along.
