Bones‘ episode “The But in the Joke” looked at the comedy club business in an Angela (Michaela Conlin) centric episode. After last week’s somewhat lacking “The Bod in the Pod,” it was an improvement in plot and character development. What follows is a recap, so naturally spoilers are included from this episode.
Bones opens with a billboard painter falling who ends up gluing himself to a body. Not a lot of people would want to be in this guy’s shoes. The victim died by an arrow to the skull.
Angela apparently has a bad driving record, with her latest ticket being turning right on red. This latest revelation seems to fit with Angela’s old carefree mindset. Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) wants peanut butter and his old sparkplug wife back. Looks like Bones is building up to Angela’s journey this season as Hypable previously hinted at.
The billboard painter, termed Michelangelo by Booth (David Boreanaz), is attached to his angel Cam (Tamara Taylor) and makes our favorite observation of the evening. “Everyone here is a weird combination of smart and dumb.” When Hodgins tries to unglue Michelangelo by using Angela’s peanut butter, he resists and is revealed to be the infamous street artist Zed.
The Jeffersonian team identifies Morgan Donnelly, a telemarketer, as the unfortunate victim. After drugging Zed, Angela visibly geeks out at meeting the underground celebrity. Admitting she is star struck and granting him a kiss, she brightens up and the dead guy separates from Zed.
Alexa Eaton, the cheating girlfriend, and her brother Elliot laugh at the thought of her boyfriend being dead. Not a great way to meet the FBI. The victim died five days ago, same day as the cheating declaration, and had his face bashed in. Zed reveals to Hodgins that he made out with “that Asian chick”, leaving Hodgins not pleased. So far the best lines of the episodes are from the guest-star.
Alexa reveals to Sweets (John Francis Daley) that Morgan was a practical joker and a comedian. He had an amazing sense of humor, which is why she left his boss Denny for him. He apparently hated the arrow shtick and instead had a cerebral sense of humor.
Zed sheds some light on Angela’s current artistic crisis. She’s also the only one who knows his secret identity. Giving her props on her technique, he invites her to paint with him.
Alexa’s brother reveals that Morgan had a rival and that Mr. Fisher (Joel David Moore) is a underground comic sensation. With an interesting twist on a classic, Fisher compares the three stooges to psychopathic violence. Morgan’s so-called rival was actually a buddy, who wrote the jokes aimed at him. Brennan (Emily Deschanel) sees a flyer with Rex, who is a rival comic with the arrow shtick, making him a suspect. Bonus points to Brennan when his mallet tests positive for blood, despite his missing arrow.
Hodgins lets Angela know of his insecurity regarding her leaving him. She reveals that she kissed Zed because he’s a great artist and his art is changing the world. Apparently, Zed’s compliment about her technique, is not so as much of a compliment as previously thought. Could he be critiquing Angela’s passion?
Sweets theorizes that Donnelly stole jokes at open mic night. Booth goes undercover as a comic on open mic night with some of the stolen jokes. As Cee-Lo Booth, Booth makes his premiere performance on the stage with Fisher acting as a heckler. It turns out that on his own, without Sweets or Fisher’s jokes, he is funny as fans can attest to. The investigation works when Penny, a fellow comedian and telemarketer, is revealed to be the original writer of the jokes. She sold her jokes to Morgan who was about to move to New York to do comedy full-time.
Morgan’s head was smashed into a toilet, mostly likely by a swirly. Brennan guesses that there are 5.5 million toilets in the Washington D.C. area, an overwhelming thought. Brennan and Booth once again interview Alexa to see if she was also sick after dinner. Elliot admits to killing Morgan as he was not helping him with his act.
Angela and Hodgins sneak up on Zed to see his reaction to her piece of street art. After seeing Zed leave, Hodgins confronts him to defend Angela. Zed said he didn’t paint over her piece as he couldn’t improve it. Yay for Angela! The episode ends with Booth trying to scare Brennan with a fake arrow through his head, with no luck.
