Bones’ fourth episode in season 8 “The Tiger and the Tale” featured plenty of Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) romance, highlighted the issue of animal trafficking, and saw the demise to a Bones relationship. It’s time for the weekly recap of Bones and its heartwarming episode.
It opened with a sparring couple encountering a body due to their car being in a ditch and the spinning wheels causing the explosion of the body. Cut to the Brennan-Booth household where Brennan explains that everyone should consider what their greatest contribution would be and for her it might be being president.
After listing her best qualities like excellent understanding of the criminal justice system and a connection with the working class, Booth points out her fugitive status may hurt her. Brennan throws Donald Trump as a reason why she should run. Giving hope for all women everywhere, Brennan mentions Christine might run when she is older.
Hodgins gets a bit too excited when examining the scene, while Cam points out the tire was on the victim’s head, thus forcing some of the remains into the mouth of the guy pushing the car out of the ditch. Brennan worries the stomach acid of the guy who swallowed some of the remains could affect the ability to understand the crime. She forces him to throw up and lost Booth’s vote (and probably some of the viewers) in the process.
Sweets and Daisy reunite to celebrate that they’re moving in together! With the multitude of different keys and Daisy’s obvious exuberance contrasted with Sweets’ timid display, the scene foreshadows that all might not be well on the relationship front.
Sweets comes to the lab to check the thread count of towels that Daisy picked out. Sweets seems to be excited yet noticeably freaked out about the next step. Cam tries to cheer him up while admitting that compromise can be difficult.
While at the former fairground, Brennan scopes it out for the site of her political rally. While the foreman of the work crew complains about the economy, Brennan states her plan to get the economy back on track, without identifying which party she would run for. The foreman identifies the victim as Jared Drew.
The victim was a day laborer who previously owned a hardware store. The recovering economy is highlighted by Booth while Sweets is still distracted by his relationship.
Evidently a restraining order was filed against the victim by his wife two days before his death. His wife got together with her current boyfriend after Jared Drew lost his job and store in order to provide for her kids. Angela and Cam discover that the victim worked at the pet expo as a day laborer. With the huge industry of exotic pet trafficking uncovered, the team speculates that illicit activity had a role in his death.
The head of the pet expo reassures Brennan and Booth that no illegal trade occurred at the pet expo while Daisy and Hodgins discover that a Siberian Tiger slashed the victim, leaving bacteria in his system.
Hodgins and Angela argue over who’s more important at the lab with Angela feeling inadequate. Sweets overhears and thinks it is a fight rather than a disagreement. Angela deduces that he’s nervous about moving in with Daisy and is not ready for the next step; while Sweets calls it only a “minor commitment.”
Booth and Sweets try to decide why the victim didn’t seek medical treatment with Sweets deducing that he was delivering a Siberian Tiger illegally to a buyer. The owner of the pet expo is more concerned with the safety of the animals and his reputation than solving the murder. By using government satellites, Angela is able to somewhat narrow down where tigers might be in the surrounding areas.
Cute Brennan and Booth banter of the episode continues with Brennan revealing she thinks zoos are inhumane and that Christine will just watch television to see exotic animals. Booth disagrees but compromises by saying they’ll get a dog for Christine someday, hopefully named Gretzky.
By using his own satellite, Hodgins discovers an animal farm full with zebras and camels. The owner, Thomas Casey, denies owning a tiger and claims that his animals are legal. Brennan finds carrion birds and an empty cage, leading her to discover a dead Siberian Tiger. Visibly upset at the shooting of the tiger, Brennan collapses sobbing in Booth’s arms. Brennan expects the death penalty for the tiger’s execution while the actual fine is $50,000 and a year or two in jail.
Casey admits to purchasing the tiger but reveals that Drew and another man transported the tiger to him, as previously arranged anonymously online. Brennan appoints Booth as the head of the FBI in recognition of his skills during their interview.
The head of the animal expo denies any and all charges, despite the foreman of the work crew identifying him as the recipient of funds. Brennan identifies him as being infected with the tiger’s bacteria due to his persistent coughing. He caves and confesses he killed Drew in order to not go to jail after transporting the tiger.
Daisy is visibly excited outside their new apartment while Hodgins and Angela awkwardly run into the couple, suggesting Sweets carry her across the threshold. Sweets chickens out and admits he’s not ready for them to have a future together. Daisy envisions them getting married and having kids, while Sweets pays the first two months’ rent, but ends up dumping her. What a sad end to a mostly entertaining relationship on Bones.
In a scene previously unveiled in a “Breakfast with Bones” video this morning, the episode ends on a happier note. Brennan lists the former jobs of past presidents in order to convince Booth that she should run. While Booth admits he would not vote for her, he unveils buttons on his shirt, to show he will always support her and stand by her.
Best Lines:
Daisy: “I hope you’ll be pleased Madame President.”
Brennan: “Dr. Brennan will do.”
Daisy: “For now.”
Booth to Brennan: “You’re rare and beautiful.”
Were you expecting Daisy and Sweets to break up? Are you waiting for a big bad guy to show up or reappear this season? Do you foresee all going smoothly for Booth and Brennan? What did you think of this episode? Can you see Brennan as president?
