Black Sails’ latest villain may be gone, but that doesn’t mean the trouble is over.
Last week, we saw Captain Charles Vane (Zach McGowan) take out the newest badboy in town, Ned Low. Initially, it looked like Ned Low was going to be the antagonist of the season. Now that he’s lost his crew and his head at Vane’s hands, it seems we are back to the Vane vs. Flint showdown.
Flint, quite literally has his guns, via the Spanish galleon that he stole, pointed directly at Vane. In case anyone has forgotten, Flint is pretty serious about accomplishing his dream. Those who stand in his way, even good friends and allies like Mr. Gates, are eliminated.
The most interesting parts in the storm that’s brewing are the unknown factors. Those factors amount to essentially three groups of people: Billy Bones, the female hostage taken from Ned Low, and the newly formed crew of Captain Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny.
Billy Bones may end up bringing in the British Empire, and a whole world of hurt down upon Vane and Flint. At this point, he has little love or loyalty for either man. Will he break the pirate code and side with the British?
Our unknown hostage obviously comes from a position of money, but with that money there is also power and influence. What might she bring to the table? Who knows, maybe she is more skilled at playing the game of manipulation than we have been led to believe.
Then, there is the little matter of Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny. After last week, they found themselves in a chummy situation with Vane once again thanks to Max’s intersession. The question is, do they side with Vane, and together do their combined forces bring down Flint? On the other hand, is it possible that Rackham and Bonny lay low, let Vane and Flint destroy each other, and then become the default leaders as the only survivors left standing? They have a lot to potentially gain if they play the role of the spoilers.
No matter what happens here, it doesn’t seem likely it will end with a handshake and an agreement to be buddies.
Black Sails airs tonight on Starz at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
