Three new Black Sails videos continue to prove that survival in the 1700s Caribbean wasn’t just a game of strength, but a mental game as well.
After last week’s episode, it was pretty obvious that the women of Nassau are every bit as dangerous, if not more so than the men.
In particular, Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New) made it quite clear that what she values most is her independence, and the life that she has built with her own two hands. Her father’s connections might “launder” the illegal goods that Eleanor trades in, but it’s her savvy business sense that sets the worth of each haul.
Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy) discovered the hard way that Eleanor will not put personal feelings ahead of her business interests. Despite Max offering Eleanor a chance to escape the hard life of Nassau for a possible life of riches with her, Eleanor rejects Max, and in doing so leaves Max at the mercy of those who will hunt her.
In a new clip from STARZ, we finally see Eleanor interact with her infamous father. It’s not exactly a touching “Daddy’s little girl” moment.
Eleanor isn’t the only one attempting to stay one step ahead in this life-and-death game of chess. Gates (Mark Ryan) successfully managed to keep Captain Flint in power after wheeling and dealing and buying votes.
On the other hand, he also is now one of four people keeping a secret about the Flint that could get them all killed if their deception is ever revealed and proven.
The life expectancy of career piracy isn’t exactly high. Gates has stayed alive as long as he has because he knows how to trade information and use that information to his advantage.
Sometimes knowing when to stay quiet is what it takes to stay alive. In the next clip, Gates squares off with Rackham, his counterpart on Captain Vane’s ship. Gates might be relatively quiet, but the wheels are turning.
The one person who looks like he is heading for disaster, due to his over confidence and poor assessment of allies, is John Silver (Luke Arnold). So far he has been very resourceful and lucky. The question is: Will his over-confidence be his undoing?
Episode 3 of Black Sails airs on Saturday at 10 p.m.
