Last Sunday at MTV’s 2013 VMA’s, every ‘N Sync fan’s fantasy came to fruition as the boys reunited to perform on stage together for the first time in 10 years.
While we all wish the performance would have lasted longer, the truth of the matter is, the mere sight of Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick singing and dancing on stage together again in perfect, well…sync like they’d never broken up in the first place was enough to turn us all back into the squealing teeny boppers we all were in the days when boy bands reigned supreme.
If you’re anything like us here at Hypable, ‘N Sync’s short set at the VMAs made you more than a little eager to bust out your old CDs, grab a group of your besties, and practice your choreographed dance moves like it was 1999 again.
And so, in honor of the reunion everyone said would never ever take place, we asked the Hypable staff what their favorite ‘N Sync song of all time was– this is what they had to say:
Brandi’s favorite: “I Want You Back” (1998)
An ‘N Sync reunion at this year’s VMA’s?! I haven’t been this excited about a boy band from the late ’90s since I saw a Hanson acoustic performance a few months back.
Picking a single ‘favorite’ song of theirs was probably the hardest thing I’ve been asked to do all week, but I decided to go with the initial song that drew me to them.
“I Want You Back” is the band’s first single off their debut self-titled album. I remember waiting for this song to be played on the radio so I could record it on a cassette tape – until my parents gave in and bought me the CD. I studied the dance moves and am surprised that I still remember most of them!
‘N Sync’s music got me through many rough moments in my younger life and for that I am forever a fan.
Colleen’s favorite: “I Drive Myself Crazy” (1999)
The major thing that really differentiates “I Drive Myself Crazy” from ‘N Sync’s other hits is Chris Kirkpatrick. Remember Chris? Remember other group members besides Justin and JC? Well this was Chris’ big time to shine– his only solo on a major single– and he made us all proud.
The video is a force to be reckoned with as well. Be honest folks, was there any place in the world you wanted to be in 1999 more than that padded room with ‘N Sync in their silk jammies?
It’s Justin at his most Ramen-haired, Chris at his most pineapple-y, and Joey at his most Superman-tastic– but they were all so, so dreamy. The literal interpretation of the song’s title made this both their most ridiculous video, and arguably one of their best all at the same time. It was a perfect storm of great vocals, a catchy tune, dreamy faces, and the hilarious personalities that made us fall in love with them.
Kristen’s favorite: “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” (1999)
As soon as someone mentioned picking our favorite ‘N Sync songs, the first to come to mind was the incomparable “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays”. Sure, I love “It’s Gonna Be Me”, “I Want You Back”, and “Gone”, but this song has a special place in my musical upbringing. It is the first song I look for when I make my yearly Christmas playlists. On November 1st every year I turn this song on and start the long march through the holiday season.
More often than not, a pop star’s Christmas album will have a couple of good covers, and some not so great original Christmas tunes, but not ‘N Sync. They have some of the best collection of original Christmas tunes we’ve seen in recent years. Oh, and remember, “It’s a wonderful feeling, with the love in the room from the floor to the ceiling. It’s that time of year, Christmastime is here.” And yeah, I know it’s still August…
