A new documentary following the Backstreet Boys after their tremendous success in the late ’90s and early ’00s finds one of your favorite boy bands looking for their next move.
Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of follows the five-person group for a two-year period as they work on their most recent album In a World Like This. Along the way we learn more about their success between 1999 and 2002, including what it was like to work with Lou Pearlman, the super producer who put them together and was eventually convicted of a huge Ponzi scheme.
The fact that this documentary isn’t just a fluff piece about how great they are – and also depicts their fade, rebirth, and the Pearlman drama – will probably make it a compelling watch for anyone who’s been a fan of their work. We suspect that we’ll get to watch the boys hit some bumps in the road as they put together In a World Like This. We’re also hoping to see a segment on Kevin Richardson’s departure, his realization that he’s nothing without the Backstreet Boys, and his return to the group.
Even though the documentary may be insightful, it is ultimately a promotional vehicle for their latest album released in June 2013.
We – and probably many others – will check it out for the nostalgia factor alone.
Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of will be available in select theaters and for purchase on iTunes in January.
