There’s been a few bumps in the road during The Avengers: Age of Ultron promotional tour, as Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner release statements after calling Black Widow a “slut” during an interview.
We imagine the promotional tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron is pretty taxing on all the actors involved in the film, and with Robert Downey Jr. walking out of an interview after a reporter started prodding him about his past drug use, Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner jokingly called Black Widow a whore and a slut while doing a video interview yesterday.
In the video you’ll hear Renner answer a question about Black Widow’s relationship status by saying, “she’s a slut.” And Chris Evans follows up by saying, “I was about to say the same thing.” It was a cringeworthy moment, as they clearly didn’t intend to disrespect their fellow co-star, Scarlett Johansson, but after a long day of answering questions they seem to have slipped up in a big way. Watch the interview below (minor spoilers included):
A lot of people were hitting them back on Twitter today, with most people agreeing that they went too far by calling Black Widow’s character a “slut” or a “whore” because she seems interested in multiple male superheroes. In response to the negative reaction to what they said, the two actors have released statements apologizing for what was said.
Chris Evans released this statement, saying, “Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.”
Susan Patricola, a representative for Jeremy Renner, released this statement to USA Today, which said, “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”
Both actors seem like they’re disappointed to have made the statements about their female co-star, and we’re glad they decided to get ahead of the negative response.
As for Robert Downey Jr. walking out of a recent interview where a reporter started prodding him about his ancient personal life, we won’t even link to the interview, because they don’t even deserve the views on YouTube.
Let us know what you think about the actors’ comments and responses during The Avengers: Age of Ultron promotional tour, and we’ll be sure to keep fans updated as the film makes its way to theaters in the U.S. on May 1.
