James Cameron’s sequel to his 2009 science fiction record-breaker Avatar will not make its previously planned December 2017 date, according to The Wrap.
The news comes just a day after Disney pushed Star Wars: Episode VIII, their sequel to The Force Awakens, to December 15, 2017. (It was previously set for May of that year.) The new date spelled bad news for Avatar 2 because it was scheduled to open just one week after Star Wars’ new December date.
Avatar 2 had originally been planned for December 2016, but a delay was announced about this time last year, and to help get the sequels moving faster down the production line, Cameron had tasked different screenwriters with simultaneously penning Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4, all of which were expected to shoot back-to-back-to-back.
Despite two delays, it’s doubtful that Avatar 2’s release is doomed. There’s really no going back at this point because the world of Avatar is starting to grow outside the theater in big ways: Disney is currently building an Avatar Land at their Animal Kingdom park in Orlando, Florida, and there are also plans for Cirque de Soleil to produce a show themed around the blue people (Edit: The show is called TORUK and it’s touring now!).
In other words, the world of Avatar is just getting started. Even if it’s taking a while to get rolling.
