We’ve rounded up the latest news about Arrow season 4, including new casting calls and the status of John Barrowman’s contract.
Casting calls
First, it looks like Arrow may be giving Felicity a rival in the upcoming season, perhaps one affiliated with H.I.V.E.? According to TVLine, the second episode of season 4 will introduce a 20-something African American male who is described as a “technological savant.” The character will be heavily recurring.
The series is also looking for a “big name” to guest star as Patty, a mayoral candidate who is deeply committed to her city and willing to risk her life to stand up for the people, reports E! Online. Described as being in her 50s to early 60s, Patty has connections to the late Queen matriarch, Moira, and once had a close relationship with the Queen siblings.
Notably, Patty is also described as a mother who “cares for her daughter above all else.” We’ve already met Mama Lance and Mama Smoak, which doean’t leave us many options for established female characters on Arrow. Might her daughter be a Flash character?

Malcolm Merlyn and the Pit
Screencrush reports that John Barrowman will return as a series regular for season 4. Season 3 ended with Malcolm becoming the next Ra’s al Ghul, so it seems like the League will continue to play a role in the series.
Teasing season 4, Barrowman said at Las Vegas Comic-Con, “[I]f you love Malcolm Merlyn, if you love Oliver Queen, if you love Thea Queen, if you love the Canary sisters … I say that with a bit of a twist and a joke, you’re gonna love what’s gonna happen across the DC world.”
The Canary sisters, of course, are Laurel and Sara Lance. Sara was murdered in the season 3 premiere, but we know from the Legends of Tomorrow trailer that she will be resurrected by the Lazarus Pit. Though we know Arrow and The Flash will set up the spinoff, with Legends not airing until mid-season, we don’t know when to expect Sara’s resurrection to occur, though Barrowman’s comment implies it will happen on Arrow.
With Malcolm, the new Ra’s, remaining a series regular, we have to wonder if Nyssa will play a larger role in season 4 as well, especially with Sara’s impending resurrection.

Sara is not the only character to be affected by the Lazarus Pit, though. Thea was revived with the Pit in season 3, and it sounds like she may be in some trouble come season 4. Stephen Amell gave a brief tease of the season 4 premiere after reading the script:

Could her issues be Pit-related? Then again, Thea suited up as Speedy in the season 3 finale, so her trouble could easily be hero-related as well.
A new director
Finally, season 4 will see Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander helming an episode. The director confirmed her commitment on Twitter:
They have not. But I'm excited to direct Arrow in August. ;-) https://t.co/hoMNh6N8B2
