Arrow and The Flash executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg recently teased more about what we can expect from the upcoming spinoff.
We previously reported that The CW is developing a spinoff from Arrow and The Flash that will star Arrow‘s Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/Atom) and Caity Lotz (Sara Lance/Canary) and The Flash‘s Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold) and Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein/half of Firestorm). The spinoff is also casting three DC Comics characters who have never appeared in a television series.
With the new series being described as a “superhero team-up” series, Berlanti explained that this new project is intended to be “most similar to our crossover episodes, where you feel that ‘event-iness,’ but all the time.”
He added, “For us, first and foremost, with all of [our shows], it’s about ‘how is it its own thing?’ Because we don’t just want to do it to do it.” Berlanti compared Arrow and The Flash “to old Westerns” with the individual shows having “a lot of lone gunmen and sheriffs in town.”
That, then, makes this upcoming spinoff “very much an ode to things like The Magnificent Seven or those great heist pics like Ocean’s Eleven where you get all of those colors at the same time, and a true ensemble, and that was the fun of it.”
As for that ensemble, Berlanti revealed big consideration went to their most popular characters as well as “tonally” which characters would mesh.
In terms of adding new heroes to the mix, Berlanti said, “I think it’s really important that we have another female hero on the show, and this one is really exciting. I can’t wait for people to find out — we just have to cast it right, as always. And then you want that Rat Pack-y kind of vibe of all this crew hanging out, as disparate and as different as they are.”
With this “event-iness” in mind, Berlanti wanted to be sure the chosen villain is “another big character who hasn’t been used yet.”
As for when we should start hearing more about the series — particularly the capacity Caity Lotz will be returning in since her character died in the Arrow season 3 premiere — Kreisberg teased, “I think by the spring, you’ll know.
“We want to keep some surprises going, but we’re really excited about that series…. just to add another leg to the tripod, and complete it.”
He added, “As different as Flash feels from Arrow, this new show will feel different from both of them.”
The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET and Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET, both on The CW.
