Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is lining up potential directors, and is allegedly casting Karl Urban as the main villain.
Aquaman is still several years away, with a schedule release date of 2018. But the character (played by Jason Momoa) is already set to make his big-screen debut next year, appearing briefly in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The character is also expected to appear in Justice League (2017), where his role will be more substantial.
But while rumors about Momoa’s cameos in other DC movies have been running wild, all’s been quiet on the waterfront regarding the actual Aquaman movie itself.
Back in August 2014, we reported that Warner Bros. had hired two writers to work on separate scripts. Now, it looks like the studio is beginning to line up potential directors.
Latino Review has learned exclusively that Noam Murro (300: Rise of an Empire) has entered the race, reportedly competing with Jeff Nichols (Mud) for the job.
As for Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Almost Human), rumor has it that Warner Bros. wants him to play an unspecified role, likely the villain.
In the DC Comics, Aquaman has several high-profile enemies, and there’s really no way of knowing which one(s) the writers have chosen for the movie. But our money’s on Black Manta, The Eel or Scavenger – mainly because these are some of the less silly figures in the campy comic.
We couldn’t see Warner Bros. banking on a superhero movie in which their already dubiously-named hero was up against the terrible forces of King Shark or the Human Flying Fish, for instance.
Urban has a pretty packed schedule, however, with his next project being the highly anticipated Star Trek 3 (2016). So we’ll have to wait and see if they can lock him down for Aquaman!
