Annie Leibovitz has gathered together some of the most important women in business, entertainment and sports for her 2016 Pirelli calendar. And it’s fantastic.
Amy Schumer, Serena Williams, Ava DuVernay and Patti Smith were among the women who modeled for Annie Leibovitz’s Pirelli 2016 calendar.
The Pirelli calendar, created by the Italian tire company of the same name, is traditionally a collection of hot, half-naked women posing for your viewing pleasure à la the pin-ups of yore.
This year, it’s all of that (give or take the nakedness), and so much more.
Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz set out to revolutionize the Pirelli calendar by selecting women not necessarily because they’re models, but because they’re awesome. And she succeeded big-time.
Comedian Amy Schumer bares all on the December page, declaring herself a real person (with all that entails).
There’s Serena Williams in April; the tennis superstar strikes a strong and fierce pose.
Other subjects include iconic females author Fran Lebowitz, producer Kathleen Kennedy, musician Yoko Ono, and philanthropist Agnes Gund.
Speaking about the theme of this year’s Pirelli calendar, Leibovitz said (as quoted by Stylecaster), “I started to think about the roles that women play, women who have achieved something. … This calendar is so completely different. It is a departure. The idea was not to have any pretense in these pictures and be very straightforward.”
The New York Times goes so far as to suggest that the new look of the Pirelli calendar signifies a cultural shift: Women are taking charge of their own bodies, and how they are to be displayed in the media, and thus we’re moving beyond a time where women have to take their clothes off (and adhere to certain size and shape conventions) in order to be deemed worth looking at.
