Fox revealed at their Television Critics Association panel today that American Idol will welcome back Keith Urban for season 13.
Network president Kevin Reilly added that Urban did not get as much attention as he deserved in season 12, so viewers should expect him to shine more in the next outing for the singing competition.
Fox added that participants will be able to see Urban, host Ryan Seacrest, and other judges on the road when they hit Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Detroit, Omaha, Salt Lake City and San Francisco later this year.
Also at the TCA panel today, Fox said that Jennifer Lopez may return as a judge. As season 12 was airing, rumors stated that the network was looking to pull a surprise for viewers by adding Lopez midseason. Those talks never panned out, however.
Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson, and Mariah Carey are not returning for the next season. Fox continues to struggle with American Idol as they search for ways to keep the show fresh and exciting. Judges over the past couple of years have failed to bring in ratings, but Lopez was very much liked by viewers during seasons 10 and 11.
If Lopez does return, it’ll be the first time that a judge has left the show for a season and then made a triumphant return. Their competitor on NBC The Voice is about to bring back Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo after they both took a season off to tour.
American Idol premieres in early 2014.
