“Alone Yet Not Alone” has lost its Oscar nomination for Best Original Song due to some shady doings behind the scenes.
When it comes to Oscar nominations, it’s expected that there will be surprises. Every year has some nominations that catch people off guard. This year was no exception as critically panned films like The Lone Ranger even received nominations.
But there was one nomination that almost nobody saw coming, and that was because it was from a film that almost nobody had heard of: Alone Yet Not Alone. At its widest release, the film only played in 11 theaters, yet it garnered enough attention to be nominated for Best Original Song.
The nomination of “Alone Yet Not Alone” lead many to ask themselves this question: how exactly does a film like this even get an Academy Award nomination?
Apparently those of us keeping score at home weren’t the only ones asking this.
On Tuesday Night, the nomination of “Alone Yet Not Alone” was taken away by the Academy’s Board of Governors after a vote on the matter. A discovery had been made that Bruce Broughton, one of the song’s writers, had unethically campaigned for his song.
Broughton was a former Governor and current Music Branch executive committee member, and he emailed other members of the Music Branch to make sure they took note of his submission. Had he not, they too could have likely missed it.
“No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one’s position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one’s own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage,” said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy President.
“It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner. If any campaign activity is determined by the Board of Governors to work in opposition to that goal, whether or not anticipated by these regulations, the Board of Governors may take any corrective actions or assess any penalties that in its discretion it deems necessary to protect the reputation and integrity of the awards process.”
“Alone Yet Not Alone” won’t be replaced on the ballot. The remaining nominees are:
“Happy” from Despicable Me 2
“Let It Go” from Frozen
“The Moon Song” from Her
“Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
Do you think ‘Alone Yet Not Alone’ deserved to have its nomination taken away?
