The latest bombshell to hit the Star Trek fandom came with yet another connection between Star Trek Into Darkness and The Wrath of Khan. Trekkies have long been speculating that Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain is Khan regardless of the reports that the character’s name is John Harrison. Now there is even more reason to wonder exactly what J.J. Abrams has in store for fans come May 17, 2013.
It has been confirmed that the character played by Alice Eve, the blonde seen screaming in the most recent trailer for the film, is none other than Dr. Carol Marcus. If you need your memory refreshed, Dr. Marcus was first introduced in Star Trek II as being the inventor of the Genesis Device, a wave of energy that can create life from lifelessness or vice versa and eventually helped bring Spock back from the dead. Additionally, Dr. Marcus was also a past love interest of Capt. Kirk’s. In fact, Dr. Marcus and the Captain had a son together, Dr. David Marcus. The son went on to be killed by Klingons in Star Trek III, a plot point that was used in Star Trek VI to put Kirk and McCoy in prison. Are you seeing the importance here?
It’s unclear exactly what role Dr. Marcus will play in Star Trek Into Darkness. It can be assumed she will be a love interest for Kirk. But given the massive amounts of destruction seen in the trailer as well as that oh-so-familiar shot of the two hands separated by glass at the end, you can bet that the comparisons between this film and The Wrath of Khan aren’t going away any time soon!
