FitzSimmons shippers around the world may soon be rejoicing, as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunners promise a significant step forward in the fan-favorite ship.
“Their relationship will visibly change forever,” Jed Whedon promises, speaking to Entertainment Weekly.
Fitz and Simmons have been on something of a roller-coaster ride, both as friends and potential love interests, since season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fitz realized his feelings for his best friend and scientific other half late in the season, and tried to sacrifice himself for her after being pushed out of an airplane by Grant Ward.

But a variety of factors (including Fitz’s brain damage and Simmons’ uncertainty) kept the pair in conflict for most of season two. When Simmons finally decided to try moving in an amorous direction with Fitz, she was sucked into the Monolith.
After Simmons’ rescue, season 3 has kept the couple close, but guardedly so — especially after Simmons revealed that she had been in a romantic relationship with an astronaut on her mysterious planet. But in the most recent episode, she and Fitz came to the realization that they might be ready to move forward together.
An image shared by EW from “Many Heads, One Tale,” certainly suggests that the scientific soulmates get physical soon.
But of course, this is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — so nothing can be entirely easy for anyone, no matter how in love they may be.
“We always have to keep it complicated,” Whedon says. “And we continue to do a good job of that moving forward.”
But Whedon teases that an unequivocal step forward will be taken. “This is the episode where they both will express their feelings finally about everything that’s gone down,” he says.
Showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen muses that the FitzSimmons relationship has grown naturally from her and Whedons’ own closeness. (The two are married, in addition to being co-executive producers on the series.)
“When we first conceived Fitz and Simmons, and we would pitch out those characters, it was something that Jed and I did by finishing each other’s sentences,” she says. “It was just something that involuntarily happened. Because of the nature of that relationship, we’ve grown very fond of them.”
Whether or not Tuesday’s events leads to lasting coupley bliss for Simmons and Fitz, Tancharoen promises, “We care very much about this unrequited love story that we’ve built since the beginning.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3×08, “Many Heads, One Tale,” airs on Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
