Emmy Award-winning actress Drea de Matteo is joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — and joining forces with an established baddie.
De Matteo will play Karla Faye Gideon, described by Marvel as a “Gifted” woman (and yes, Gifted has a capital G) who has “a grudge to bear against S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Yeah, well, get in line.
Karla will throw her lot in with Skye’s rather volatile father Cal (Kyle MacLachlan), who has a few complaints of his own against the shattered organization. We’re sure that Karla and Cal will be totally sane and happy together.
It’s interesting to observe that de Matteo’s character is described as “Gifted,” rather than an Inhuman. It’s no secret that Inhumans will become a major element in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 — Luke Mitchell’s character Lincoln was flat-out announced as an Inhuman when he was cast. Could Karla’s powers have a different source? Or are we nit-picking here?
Also of note is Karla Faye Gideon’s comic book connection to Matt Murdock — otherwise known as Daredevil. The character currently bears few similarities to her comic book counterpart, who has no extraordinary abilities and mostly tangles with Daredevil during his day job as a defense lawyer.
Still, with Marvel’s Daredevil series hitting Netflix on April 10, there is reason to keep an eye on de Matteo’s character. Though Marvel has been characteristically cryptic on the subject of crossovers between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the quartet of shows coming to Netflix, fans have been well-trained to remember that “It’s all connected.”
In other words, your guess is as good as ours.
Many television viewers will recognize Drea de Matteo from her role as Adrianna La Cerva on HBO’s The Sopranos. De Matteo has also starred on Sons of Anarchy, Desperate Housewives, and other series.
“We’re thrilled to have Drea join us as yet another great villain to challenge our cast,” said Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeph Loeb. “We relished the opportunity to work with her in such a menacing role.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 11, “Aftershocks,” will air on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
