In spite of varying totals, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has made significant gains in key ratings demographics.
The ratings game is never an easy one to play, especially in today’s television landscape. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had its highs and lows in this respect, and the trend continues with news both disheartening and encouraging.
According to TV by the Numbers, Tuesday night’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scored only a 1.5 in the important demographic of viewers 18-49. The previous episode, perhaps bolstered by the tease of new footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron, scored a 1.7.
The 1.5 rating is a series low for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it is worth noting that the show’s overnight ratings numbers are frequently adjusted upward.
In addition, ABC released encouraging news about the show’s numbers in the key demographic of men 18-34. According to the network, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the most-watched scripted series in its timeslot in this category – and has been for four straight episodes.

ABC has also projected that the show’s Live +3 numbers (viewed on DVR within three days) will increase the total ratings to 2.2 in the 18-49 demographic. The network expects approximately 6.4 million viewers in total.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s ability to pull in the male demographic is presumably an important consideration for ABC. The network is perceived as performing very well among female viewers, but is less able to draw in and maintain the male audience which the Marvel series provides.
While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans still have reason to hold their collective breath, it’s certainly encouraging that the show can reliably succeed – and hopefully improve – in important viewing demographics.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 8, “The Things We Bury,” will air on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
