Marvel’s Agent Carter premieres tomorrow night, and fans can whet their appetites with behind-the-scenes videos.
In the first video, a brief featurette from Marvel, actress Hayley Atwell sets up Peggy Carter’s status at the start of the series. Atwell’s interview is intercut with shots of Peggy being a badass.
“She has an intelligence about her, and a skill set that’s very impressive,” Atwell says. “But yet we get to see the emotional and psychological cost of her character, of someone who’s having to live a double life.”
Atwell’s eloquence on the subject of Agent Carter continues in a segment from ABC News, which took a tour behind the scenes and spoke with several members of the cast about Marvel’s new miniseries.
The atmosphere of the 1940’s – Agent Carter picks up in 1946 – is a particular focus of this segment. As a woman attempting to do “man’s work,” Atwell says that Peggy will experience severe underestimation by her male colleagues. Instead of an agent, she is treated like a secretary.
Chad Michael Murray, who plays S.S.R. agent Jack Thompson, agrees with Atwell’s assessment. “Women were viewed almost as second-class citizens,” he says. “As unacceptable as it is, that’s how it was.”

The regressive atmosphere of the 1940’s does offer some stylistic compensation, however. ABC’s reporter explores the costume department of Agent Carter, which provides Hayley Atwell and the cast with an impeccable gamut of era-authentic apparel – some of which is genuinely vintage.
Still, a new sneak peek from Agent Carter illustrates just how frustrating life will be for Peggy at the start of the series.
Though Peggy does have a certain camaraderie with Agent Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) it’s frustrating to see her forced to play games in order glean information. Hopefully her efforts will eventually gain her some much-deserved respect in the workplace.
