If you are a die hard Whovian, chances are you have some Doctor Who gear to show your fandom love. Since it’s currently Black Friday in the U.S. there are some awesome deals on Doctor Who merchandise today, so stock up while you can.
Let’s kick this off by starting with officially licensed gear. The BBC America shop has some price reductions today as well as free shipping on orders over $100. If you and your friends combine your Sherlock, Merlin, and Doctor Who shopping, hitting the $100 threshold shouldn’t be an issue.
‘The TARDIS USB Hub’
If you are like me and have a Mac, the one thing that really frustrates you on a regular basis is that you only have two USB ports. I personally solved this issue via the TARDIS USB Hub. This way I can have in my USB headset, external mouse and video camera all hooked up at once. It’s down to $29.99 today, so snag it at that price while you can.
‘The TARDIS Lidded Coffee Mug’
While we are on a TARDIS theme, this next item is totally on my wish list this year…hint, hint, hint to my family reading this. I already have the mug where the TARDIS appears and disappears based on hot much hot liquid is in my mug. Now I want the TARDIS with the removable lid. I haven’t really decided if I’ll use it as an actual mug or a really cool paperclip holder on my desk, but bottom-line I need this one for my collection. At $15.98 it’s a real bargain.
‘Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Monopoly’
Who doesn’t like the classic board game Monopoly? With 2013 being the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, combine your Monopoly and Whovian love on this commemorative limited edition Doctor Who Monopoly set. Game pieces include sonic screwdrivers, scarf, cybermen, and bow tie pieces. It’s a bit on the expensive side at $39.98. If you Google around sometimes you can find it for less, but watch your shipping charges!
‘Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote’
I saw this model at Comic Con this year and I was instantly in love. Is it frivolous and expensive? Yes. However I still want my very own Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote, darn-it! The only thing that could make it better would be if David Tennant appeared as I pointed it at the TV while shouting “allons-y”. According to the official description, “Your gestures control up to 39 infrared signals for entertainment systems-TVs, iPod docks, DVD/Blu-ray players, and more. The tip lights up in use; pulses in standby. Thirteen Doctor Who sound effects.” As I said it’s pricey, but seeing as my remote is dying anyway, I just might spring for this at $99.95
Now as great as the official merchandise is, never underestimate fan creativity. Sites like Etsy, Redbubble, and TeeFury have some awesome fan created items that are great quality. Here are some of my current favortites
‘Doctor Who Laptop Stickers’
There are tons of these on Etsy. In fact you can not only get them for your laptop, but really any kind of electronic device you have from a Kindle Fire to a Droid. You can either get one skin to cover your entire device, or several to create a collage effect. Prices range from about $4.00 to $20.00, so finding something you can afford is relatively easy.
‘Doctor Who Smart Phone Cases’
Stickers are great for your laptop or tablet, but when it comes to my phone, I want some more durable protection. Right now, my iPhone has the Vincent Van Gough inspired Tardis case on it. Redbubble has everything you can imagine from images of favorite Doctors, to beloved companions, and some really clever slogans. Prices are in the $30-$40 range. Word of warning, the case does make it slightly difficult to hook your phone up to the auxiliary system in your car. The jack doesn’t fit the phone as tightly as normal. You may have to revise equipment if this is a priority for you.
‘Doctor Who Tees and Hoodies’
Aside from being an excellent source for your electronic devices, Redbubble also has great tees and hoodies. Now there are a lot of sources out there where you can get fan made apparel, and sadly in some of those places you order a shirt, wash it once, and discover it would now fit a Barbie doll. Fortunately, in my experience, Redbubble merchandise doesn’t seem to shrink. I was wearing their stuff all through Comic Con this summer. The men’s sizes run true to size. For women’s if you don’t like form fitting, order a size up. Depending on what you are ordering, prices range from the mid $20-$40 area.
Another, fantastic T-shirt source is TeeFury. They feature a tee shirt a day, and Doctor Who merchandise pops up on average of once a week. The way they work is the tee is only available for 24 hours at the bargain price of $10. If you miss out, try searching Redbubble, most of the TeeFury artists are there too.
‘Doctor Who Inspired Jewelry’
Many of you are probably familiar with the Tardis ring that set set Whovian’s tongues wagging last year. It comes in a sapphire and non-sapphire version, as well as diamond and CZ version. The designer has also branched out and is now making an Ameila’s crack CZ necklace. Check out all the designs at the Art Gems Jeweler’s shop. Prices start at $149.
