‘Veronica Mars Movie’ Easter eggs:
‘We Used to be Friends’ by Alejandro Escovedo
“We Used to Be Friends” is, of course, the theme song to the Veronica Mars television show, and has been since the beginning. The Dandy Warhols version was featured in the season 1 and 2 opening credits, but season 3 got a little bit of a makeover. It was slowed down and changed up for Veronica’s college years.
Creator Rob Thomas wanted to do something a bit different with the theme for the movie as well. It only makes sense that the song would change as Veronica changes. In one of the opening scenes, you can see Alejandro Vasquez as a street performer outside the building where Piz works, singing his version of the theme song.
What the hell is a Spondoolie?
In the movie, Bonnie Deville is performing her song “Holding My Breath.” Veronica sees the music video for this, and we notice that Bonnie’s record company is called Spondoolie Music. Sharp-eyed fans will know that Spondoolie is the name of the production company on the Veronica Mars movie.
Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that “Holding My Breath” is performed by Andrea Estella, who does indeed play Carrie Bishop in the film. Estella is the lead singer of the band Twin Sister, and if you listen to their song “I Want a House,” you’ll notice it sounds pretty familiar.
Dax can dance!
Oh, hey there, Dax Shephard! Did you catch Kristen Bell’s real-life husband dancing like a maniac at the 09er club? He was the one wearing the terrible shirt and making some pretty obvious passes at Veronica. It was gag-worthy, to be sure, and V had the same reaction.
Although he was there for only a matter of seconds, we love the little cameo he made. For the die-hard Veronica Mars fans who have followed the stars after their stint on the show, it’s a nice little Easter egg.
The other Rob Thomas
“Rob Thomas is a whore” will always be the best Rob Thomas line in the Veronica Mars TV series, but we loved the one that was in the film as well. “Maybe some solo Rob Thomas,” Piz says, listing the musicians he’d love to hear playing at Veronica’s reunion. It seems that perhaps his opinion of the Matchbox Twenty lead singer has softened over the years?
While it’s true that Rob Thomas (the musician) did embark on a solo career, we’re just going to pretend this line was a clear shoutout to the network that cancelled the Veronica Mars television series in its third season. Rob Thomas (the writer) doesn’t need a network to keep Veronica alive, he’ll do it on his own! (Well, 90,000+ Kickstarter backers and $5 million dollars helps, too.)
Another life
This might just be our favorite Easter egg in the movie. After a cute reunion with Detective(!) Leo, the former deputy asks what V has been up to. “I could’ve sworn you were with the FBI,” he says. “In another life, maybe,” Veronica replies.
This is a throwback to the season 4 pitch to The CW where Veronica went through the Academy and joined the FBI. Ultimately season 4 didn’t happen, and the film took a different path entirely, with Veronica ending up as a lawyer instead of an agent. Even without a straightforward explanation, we loved that they decided to make a point of bringing it up for those fans who would know the true meaning behind that line.
